F.A.Q. 2.0/ Rules

[Updated 1/23/04]

Welcome to the new Frequently Asked Questions version 2.0!

Here you'll find that we've categorized common questions in order to find your answers quickly.

General Information      Back to top
Location and Times of the Event:

Q:  When is the event held?
A:  The event usually occurs every six weeks, starting at 12 Noon on a Saturday.  Check the calendar for any changes.

Q:  Where is the event held?
A:  TBA.

Q:  What time does the event start?
A:  On the scheduled day, starting at 12 Noon.

Q:  What time does the event end?
A:  No later than 6AM Sunday morning, but it could be earlier due to attendance.

Q:  How long has this event been going?
A:  Over 5 years now.

Q:  Why don't you guys hold this event more often?
A:  It is a very time consuming task organizing this event, and we all have lives and need to live them.

Q:  Why don't you guys hold this event closer to my house?
A:  The current location that we have suits our needs and is fairly centrally located in the Kansas City area.

     Age Requirements:

Q:  What is the minimum age requirement?
A:  The current minimum age to attend our event is 18 years old at the time of the event.

Q:  Why is there a minimum age requirement?
A:  To avoid legal issues, nothing more, nothing less.

Q:  Will there ever be a change in the age requirement?
A:  Probably not, but we continue to look into the issue.

Q:  Can anyone come to the event?
A:  Anybody that meets the age criteria, completes registration and prepays can.

Q:  How old are the people who usually come to the event?
A:  It varies.  Age range is 18 to 40.

Q:  Can females come to the event?
A:  Do you have a computer?  Yes!  Come join in the fun.  Lately, our event has been catching popularity with female gamers/computer enthusiasts.

     Internet, Network and Computer Requirements:

Q:  Will there be Internet access?
A:  Yes, there will!  Keep in mind, the access is only for browsing for information, drivers, game patches, os enhancements, and virus updates.

Q:  How do I connect to the network?
A:  Set your PC to connect to a network using DHCP through TCP/IP protocol, that's it!

Q:  What do I do if I can't connect to the network?
A:  We run a peer to peer network; nothing fancy; if you can't connect most likely it is a hardware problem (we provide VERY little tech support).  Please verify computer operation before arriving.

Q:  Can I trade files?
A:  What you do with your computer is your business. (please read our waiver)

Q:  Can I bring a second computer?
A:  Since network and table space is limited; the simple answer is no.  But if you provide a private ethernet switch (no hubs) to connect your equipment to AND you can squeeze in the space allowed for a single gamer... then yes.

Q:  Can I bring my own game server?
A:  Yes you can, but we have very limited space.  Our facility providers have designated an area for such a purpose - hook it up to the switch and KVM and you're ready to go.

Q:  What are the minimum PC requirements?
A:  I'm talking MINIMUM here, but at least a Pentium II 400 class or better with 3D accelerator, gForce II class or better.  With this configuration, don't expect stellar frames per second in Battlefield 1942!

Registration and Cost      Back to top

Q:  How much does it cost to attend?
A:  We currently charge $20 via PayPal when you register online, or, $25 at the door for walk-ins if we have any available seats left.  Also note that walk-ins cost $5 more than if you were to pre-pay.  Why, you ask?  We need to be sure to purchase enough snacks and drinks, as well as have our pizza order called in that morning, not to forget that we also are limited to our seating capacity, and if we don't know how many people are going to be there, then it makes things quite difficult to plan.

Q:  Why does it cost?
A:  All you can eat pizza, snacks and soda add up quick.  Also, we have door prizes and tournament prizes.  We also provide possibly the best place in the area to LAN and offer Internet access from your seat.  All money that's left over is held to purchase better equipment and more prizes for the next events.
You can also think about it this way:
You and your buddies decide to watch a pay-per-view boxing match over at your friend's house.  Your friend orders the pay-per-view channel, a bunch of beer, and all the food and snacks for everyone.  You and your buddies all chip in to help pay your friend back for the cost of holding the event at his house.  Make sense now?  KCBeatDown is not a business, just a well organized collaboration of friends.

Q:  Do I have to register for EVERY event?
A:  Yes.

Q:  I registered a while ago and have not heard anything, what do I do?
A:  Did you supply us with a VALID e-mail address during the registration process?  Is the e-mail account still active?  Did you check your e-mail?

Q:  Registration is closed, is there a waiting list?
A:  No, there is not.

Q:  Registration is closed, can I get in anyway?
A:  Sometimes we'll have spots still open by the time of the event in which case you may attend as a walk-in, providing there is space left for you.

Q:  I prepaid and I can't make it to the event, what can I do?
A:  If you can't make it, let us know via e-mail and tell us if you would like for us to carry over your payment to the next event or refunded back to your PayPal account.  If you want to give your spot to another attendee who meets the requirements, you will need to notify us via e-mail prior to the event date.  Failure to notify one of the organizers will result in forfeiture of the entire prepay amount.

Q:  Who do I contact for further registration questions or issues?
A:  Cali is our registration organizer.

Tournaments      Back to top

Q:  What tournaments are there?
A:  The answer varies; please contact the tournament liaison.
Generally speaking, standard Tourney Games we are currently open to:

Quake 3 Arena - Instagib & FFA
Unreal Tournament FFA
Quake 2 CTF
Aliens Vs Predator 2 FFA
Tetrinet
Scrabble 2
Tribes 2

Other games will be considered as they are released (Duke Nukem Forvever/Quake4/Doom3 anyone???).  The organizers try to select games which are popular, fun & relatively fast-paced.  If a game takes 2 hours to play a single match, don't expect to see it as a Tournament game.

Q:  How much does each tournament entry cost?
A:  Currently, there is NO extra cost for ANY tournament.  Enjoy all of them if you want!

Q:  How do I sign-up for a Tournament?
A:  There are numerous PA announcements that Tournament sign-up is open.  A sheet for sign-ups is normally found near the big screen tv, on one of the round tables.  If in doubt you can always ask MERLIN.

Q:  Who runs the tournaments?
A:  Our tournament organizer is Merlin.

Q:  When do the tournaments start?
A:  The 1st Tournament will start between 3:00 - 4:00, give or take.  This gives entrants plenty of time to arrive, set-up, get any custom maps loaded, work-out any hardware or network issues they may have and practice.  The only exception would be major KCBD issues such as power down/network down/Tourney server down.  The organizers will probably not consider a lone entrant with any of the aforementioned problems a "Major" issue.  The second Tournament is usually run after the pizza is gone.

Q:  When do I get to practice for the tournament?
A:  A dedicated KCBD practice server will be up & running with the chosen tournament maps in rotation.  Additionally, a practice server is usually up on the net during the (2) weeks prior to the Beatdown.   Any such online practice servers will be posted on the message boards.

Q:  What if the tournament is using a map that I don't have and or haven't played?
A:  Generally, special maps (that didn't ship with the full version of the game) are chosen several weeks ahead of time.  The map names are posted on the KCBD message boards, along with a link or links to download them.  Additionally, the maps are always available over either the network at the Beatdown or on the many "KCBD Game Patches, Maps, Etc." CD-R disks that float around all during the event.  It is the entrant's responsibility to obtain & install the map BEFORE their match is set to start.

Q:  My computer is too slow, is there anything that can be done to make it more fair?
A:  There will be a grace period of 20 seconds before the start of a match (practice or Tournament) IF the game allows such settings.  If there are no such settings available, we suggest either fine-tuning or upgrading your PC.

Q:  When does the match OFFICIALLY begin?
A:  In qualifying matches, the first game is always a practice session.  The second game is the real deal.  The tournament organizers reserve the right to restart a match due to "Extenuating" circumstances - i.e.; someone trips over an entrants power cord & shuts-off his pc during the match.  In the interest of fairness, if your PC simply doesn't work properly when your match starts, you MAY be moved to a later match if it is appropriate/possible.  This is done solely at the Tournament Organizer's discretion however.  The Tournament server will be killed after each tournament match so that the next match entrants can join & do their practice/official round(s).

Q:  What if I was in the bathroom/outside/not listening when I was called for the match?
A:  The player names for the upcoming match are announced several times over the PA system.  It is the entrants responsibility to be present & listening for his/her name.  If you are not present when your match starts, you MAY be moved to a later match if it is appropriate/possible.  This is done solely at the Tournament Organizer's discretion however.

Q:  What if I wanted to compete with my clan/team mates?
A:  You need to make note of your affiliation on the sign-in sheet.  If you signed up like so:

Cali
Quetzal
Merlin

Then we have no way of knowing that you're all together.  You need to sign-up like this:

[KCBD]Cali
[KCBD]Quetzal
[KCBD]Merlin

Every effort will be made to "Spread you out", but depending on the number of entrants in a Tournament, it just may not be possible.

Q:  What kinds of tourney prizes are their?
A:  The prizes vary from Beatdown to Beatdown - our sponsors donate some really cool stuff!  In the past their have been Trophies, Hardware, Games, etc,...

Q:  What can I expect if I lose?
A:  That depends on how much "Smack" you talked before the Tournament!  Just as the Tourney winners are rewarded for the incredible skills, the losers are often given "Special" prizes based on their level of "Performance".

Q:  Who do I contact for further tournament registration questions or issues?
A:  You can e-mail the Tournament organizer:

Merlin

Games at the Event      Back to top

Q:  What games do you play?
A:  The MOST common games are in no particular order this month: Quake3, CounterStrike, Unreal Tournament, Age of Empires II, Tetrinet, and Battlefield 1942.

Q:  Do you guys play [insert game title here]?
A:  Yes; If it is network multi-player, we play it -- every six weeks!

Q:  Do I have to play the games you or the majority are playing?
A:  Nope; Play what you want.

Other Questions      Back to top

Q:  Are there door prizes?
A:  Sometimes yes.  Sometimes no. It depends on the generosity of our sponsors and what they choose to give us.

Q:  How many people usually show up for the event?
A:  The registration spots are limited.  A lot of events end up being sold out.

Q:  Can I start my own event?
A:  Sure go right ahead; we wish you the best of luck!  Just ask HarmonatoR! (KCBD North, bleh)

Q:  Can I borrow some of your equipment?
A:  Give Cali an e-mail and discuss your needs.

Q:  What is near by for food?
A:  There is a burger joint within feet of the location, a McDonalds, Taco-Pizza Hut, and a Go Chicken Go just up at the next intersection north on I-635.

Q:  What is near by for computer stores?
A:  Best Buy is less than 15 minutes away; Microcenter is about 15 minutes away.

Q:  What is near by for overnight lodging?
A:  There is lodging about 5 to 15 minutes south on I-35. (Holiday Inn, etc.)

Q:  I want to help, what can I do for the event?
A:  GREAT!  Send an email to Cali with ideas/suggestions.

Q:  Who do I contact for further general or misc. questions or issues?
A:  You can e-mail the Head Organizer, Cali.
